Kevin Aspaas

By practicing the ways of Navajo textile arts, I’m continuing the legacy left by my ancestors.

-Kevin Aspaas

Kevin Aspaas is a Diné weaver, fiber artist, shepherd, and farmer who lives on the Navajo Nation in Shiprock, New Mexico. Descending from a long line of weavers and storytellers, he first learned to weave at age ten and practices a traditional “sheep to loom” approach to his craft. He raises his own flock of Navajo-Churro sheep and oversees every step of the process himself, from shearing, carding, and spinning to coloring the wool with natural dyes. Made from ancient Diné weaving techniques, his textiles and patterns are rooted in symbolism, tradition, and centuries of cultural meaning. Aspaas’s work has been exhibited nationwide, and he serves on the board of Diné Bé'Iiná, a nonprofit dedicated to preserving Diné lifeways, weaving traditions, and sustainable sheep culture.
