Richard Saja, an artist who embellishes antique textiles, has put a whole new spin on this historic toile de Jouy by Jean-Baptiste Huet (1745–1811). Hand-embroidered in India, La Liberté Américaine Toile is a work of art and a provocative conversation piece, an extraordinary fabric that celebrates and subverts the stylistic conventions of 18th-century Europe. Hand-screened on cotton-linen union cloth, the traditional pastoral print is full of playful surprises, with animals, people, and landscape elements accentuated by colorful and unexpected hand-embroidered details.
